Barbaresco DOCG Vanotu Riserva 2010

Characteristics:

For the second time in our history, May 2020 marks the presentation of a limited edition of Barbaresco Vanotu Riserva 2010, vintage which celebrates 50 years of activity after exactly 60 years from the first bottle showing Pelissero label launched on the market by our family in 1960. Its limestone soil that brings a strong mineral note totally faces South and is well protected from cold air at 350 meters high. The Nebbiolo Michet sub variety guarantees low yields and the vines planted in 1964 ensure a balanced, concentrated and complex wine. Our particular microclimate, the natural humus used as fertilizer and traditional copper and sulphur-based treatments keep the plants healthy. After the double thinning of the fruits in August and mid-September 2010, during a memorable harvest for Langhe wine making we did select the best grapes and pressed them within a few hours from being picked. After 1000 working hours for an hectare of land, we came up with 4040,5 litres of Barbaresco.

Wine making techniques:

Still very intense red ruby wine, barely showing the first orange-red tannic reflections. Thickness and complexity immediately come to the forefront with great depth of colour and remarkable viscosity which can be well perceived when the wine rotates in the glass. The full strength of Nebbiolo comes through with flavours of blueberry, camomile, blackberry, vanilla, sage, mint, blackcurrant, red cherry, chocolate, violet, sweet tobacco, raspberry, truffle and countless more sensations that only truly great grapes will offer with ageing. Taste-wise, the same sensations will be perceived in just one rush of sapidity and complexity. The wine will taste warm, sensuous, tannic, slightly acid and with a persistent and dry after-taste that is decidedly pleasant and delicate. Exactly what you would expect from a Nebbiolo that comes from the Barbaresco hills.

2010 was an excellent vintage with a regular change of season, moderate humidity and a sunny summer with no health problems for the grapes. On October, 15th were perfectly ripe for harvest. The traditional maceration with the skins in temperature controlled casks took two more weeks with a little decanting and then on to new 225 lt. oak barrels from France, to finally rest and evolve into a most valuable wood from the Tronçais forest.
Regular tests and decanting as well as periodical tastings allowed to follow the wine’s excellent progress over the next seven years, particularly the preservation of the primary fruit and flower flavourings that were present from the start. In May 2017 the wine was finally bottled to age for three more years.
