A Vertical Tasting of Pelissero’s Vanotu Barbaresco Giorgio Pelissero’s flagship Nebbiolo comes from the intersection of the Piedmont zone’s three main townships In Italy, Piedmont's Barbaresco has its namesake village, with its famous tower and Gaja. Neive is the largest township and home to Giacosa. Treiso, the other main township, often gets overlooked, despite boasting Pio Cesare's hilltop perch, Il Bricco. Higher in elevation and without the household names of its neighbors, the Nebbiolos of Treiso can be austere in their youth, due to higher acidities and assertive tannins. Yet, this is also their distinctive feature. Treiso is home to Pelissero, an estate whose majority of vineyards lie within Treiso. The one anomaly is its flagship Barbaresco, Vanotu, the Piemontese dialect for Giovanni and named after proprietor Giorgio Pelissero's grandfather. Vanotu hails from three different MGAs (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive), each located in three different townships of Barbaresco: Tre Stelle lies within Barbaresco and includes the original parcel from Giovanni Pelissero, replanted by his son Luigi in 1964; Basarin lies in Neive and Marcarini in Treiso. In total, there are 10 acres of Nebbiolo. I recently tasted 22 vintages of Vanotu, non-blind, with its United States importer Dominic Nocerino of Vinifera Imports in Wine Spectator's New York office. All the bottles came from Vinifera's temperature-controlled warehouse, with the exception of the 1993, 1991 and 1989. All the wines were vinified by Giorgio Pelissero, the beginning of the new era at Pelissero since he took over with the 1989 vintage. Since 1991, the wines have been fermented in stainless steel, with roughly 15 days of maceration, spending 20 to 22 months in French barriques, 80 percent new, before an additional nine months in bottle before release. The defining style of Vanotu is freshness and elegance. Even as the fruit dissolves into tertiary notes of truffle, licorice and woodsy spices, there is sweetness, balanced by vibrant acidity. There is a nod to modernity, but the oak is not intrusive. However, I believe the use of barriques does result in a more rapid evolution of the wines. Freshness was evident in the 2004 Vanotu, a harmonious, classic Nebbiolo and my favorite of the group. Its complex nose of truffle, macerated cherry, licorice, tar and spice was matched by sweet fruit, with licorice, tar and spice on the finish. I put the 2011, 2001 and 1989 vintages right behind it in quality. I found similarities between the 2011 and '89, despite more than 20 years separating the two. They were elegant, with plenty of finesse, purity and detail, but while the 2011 delivered primary, fresh fruit flavors of cherry and strawberry with flowers and spice, the 1989 was aged fruit and spice, more of a confit, with an inherent sweetness. The 2001 had more power and structure, with a touch of austerity to its leather, tobacco, tar, iron and underbrush, the fruit maturing to plum and fruitcake. My next group of favorites included the 2010, whose aromas were beginning to develop sweet cherry, leather, tar and hints of rose, matched to a profile that was vibrant and long. Now at 10 years, the 2006 offered a complex bouquet of truffle, macerated cherry, rose, licorice and tar. Packed with sweet fruit, it was also firm, structured and long. Going back another decade, the 1996 was austere initially, opening up to reveal truffle, licorice, leather and tar notes, sweet and long. Most of the wines were outstanding quality (90 to 94 points on Wine Spectator's 100-point scale), with four reaching classic status (95 to 100 points); in some cases these wines showed better than in their formal reviews as new releases, indicating that Vanotu is capable of improving with age. The only exceptions were the 2000 and 1997 vintages, which seemed prematurely developed, and the 1994, from a difficult vintage that saw rain and hail. Bruce SandersonWINE SPECTATOR

Vinous: OTTOBRE 2017
Giorgio Pelissero's 2014s are just as good from bottle as they were from barrel. The wines have shut down considerably, though, so they really do need to be cellared for at least a few years to be at their best. If opened young, the 2014s need quite a bit of air. The 2015s are much more charming, seductive and immediate. It will be interesting to see if the 2015s shut down after bottling or not. As always, Giorgio Pelissero crafts forward, fruit-driven Barbarescos long on personality. From 2014 Barbaresco: An October Surprise (Oct 2017) by Antonio Galloni 2014 Barbaresco Nubiola Sweet red cherry, plum, flowers, mint and pine are all perked up by the bright acids of the vintage. This nervous, energetic Barbaresco needs time to unwind, but it is unquestionably attractive. As always, the Nubiola is the most feminine of Pelissero's Barbarescos. Hints of sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, orange peel and spice add further shades of aromatic nuance. The Nubiola is a blend of fruit from six parcels. 92 Oct 2017 2014 Barbaresco Tulin The 2014 Barbaresco Tulin is a powerhouse. A rush of dark-fleshed fruit, chocolate, mocha, cedar, smoke and leather hits the palate. Brooding and tannic, the 2014 is going to need at least a few more years in bottle to be at its best. There is no shortage of power or intensity, that much is evident. 93 Oct 2017 2014 Barbaresco Vanotu The 2014 Barbaresco Vanotu is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Like the Tulin, the Vanotu is decidedly big and tannic in feel. Black cherry, mocha, plum, leather, gravel, licorice and dark spice find support from beams of tannin that give the wine its shape. The Vanotu finishes with serious weight and pure power. The Vanotu is another wine that demands cellaring. 94+ Oct 2017 2015 Barbaresco Nubiola The 2015 Barbaresco Nubiola is terrific. In fact, the 2015 may be the best Nubiola proprietor Giorgio Pelissero has made to date. Polished and nuanced, with softer contours than is the norm, the 2015 possesses striking aromatic intensity, lovely inner sweetness and terrific overall balance. The flavors are remarkably vivid throughout. Hard candy, wild flowers, mint and rose petal are all laced into the persistent, striking finish. There is so much to look forward to. (91-93) Oct 2017 2015 Barbaresco Tulin The 2015 Barbaresco Tulin is exotic in the glass. Powerful and racy, the Tulin captures all of the exuberance of the year. This is a decidedly flamboyant style, and yet the 2015 retains terrific purity and nuance. Even so, the Tulin exudes depth and intensity in all of its dimensions. (92-95) Oct 2017 2015 Barbaresco Vanotu Pelissero's 2015 Barbaresco Vanotu exudes freshness and energy, not to mention exceptional balance. Blood orange, pomegranate, ripe red cherry and French oak run through this super-expressive Barbaresco. The 2015 is bold and racy, but, like all of these wines, it needs more time in bottle to come into its own. (92-95) Oct 2017

Degustazione Antonio Galloni Vinous 2016 – parte 2
2014 Giorgio Pelissero Long Now The 2014 Long Now, Pelissero's Barbera/Nebbiolo blend, is superb. Deep, intense Barbera fruit takes center stage in this release. Graphite, smoke, licorice, blackberry jam and dark spices emerge from the 2014, a wine that is rich and unctuous yet also linear in structure. Giorgio Pelissero won't bottle the 2014 until 2017, but even today, it is striking and also highly promising. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 responds to the last phase of aging. -- Antonio Galloni (91-94) 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Piani The 2014 Barbera d' Alba Piani is shaping up to be superb. Graphite, smoke, licorice, black cherry, plum and lavender are all beautifully delineated. Vibrant and pulsing with energy, the 2014 shows the freshness and coolness of the vintage. Once again, Pelissero did not bottle his flagship Riserva Barbera Tulin in 2013. Instead, all the fruit went into the Piani. -- Antonio Galloni (90-92)
Vintners of Nebbiolo
"Giorgio Pelissero is the third-generation winegrower of the Pelissero Winery. His grandfather Giovanni started growing grapes in the early 1900s, and his father first bottled wine in 1960. By 1990, enologist Giorgio took over the winery and expanded the production in Treiso, the heart of the Barbaresco region, exporting to more than 50 countries. “It is easier to buy grapes when vintners want to follow a trend,” says Pelissero. “But I make decisions on what to grow based on the land.” With four vineyards, including the estate property, to choose from, Pelissero produces a wide selection of wines. His personal favorites are classic, age-worthy Barbaresco DOCG Vanotu and Vanotu Riserva, named in the Piemontese dialect for his grandfather Giovanni."

Degustazione Antonio Galloni Vinous 2016
This is another set of gorgeous wines from Giorgio Pelissero. The 2013 Nebbiolos were brought in between October 18 and 26, which is very much on the late side by the estate's standards. Pelissero is among the growers who gives his wines longer aging than is now the custom. The 2013 Barbarescos spent two full years in oak (a combination of cask and barriques) and then two months in steel prior to bottling, with the Vanotu seeing the highest percentage of new French oak. Pelissero's flagship Nebbiolo/Barbera Long Now is aged exclusively in French oak, most of it new. I also tasted a few 2014s from barrel. Those wines point to another highly promising vintage at Pelissero. From Barbaresco: Worlds Apart (Oct 2016) by Antonio Galloni 2013 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola The 2013 Barbaresco Nubiola is soft, succulent and open-knit. Crushed flowers, mint, anise and dried cherries all lift from the glass in a surprisingly accessible, silky Barbaresco that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. The 2013 is not especially complex, but it is delicious and approachable, especially with some air. The Nubiola is a blend of fruit from six different sites. The youngest vines are 20 years old. -- Antonio Galloni 91 2013 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin The 2013 Barbaresco Tulin is deep and layered in the glass, but also quite shut down today. There is plenty of intensity in the glass, but the wine still needs time to come together, as it is a bit nervous today. With air, the wine starts to show some of its pedigree, but readers are best off cellaring the 2013 for at least a few years. Sweet red cherry, plum rose petal and blood orange infuse the expressive finish. This is the wine that shows the energy of the late harvest the most. -- Antonio Galloni 94 2013 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu The 2013 Barbaresco Vanotu is the most spherical and succulent of the Pelissero Barbarescos. Black cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and licorice wrap around the palate. Deep, unctuous and highly expressive, all the Vanotu needs is a few more years in bottle to come into its own. The 70% new oak softens the contours and gives the wine much of its voluptuous personality. -- Antonio Galloni 94 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin The 2014 Barbaresco Tulin is bright, focused and bristling with energy. A host of dark red cherry, plum, pomegranate and rose petal nuances are laced together in this young, pulsating Barbaresco from Giorgio Pelissero. There is plenty to look forward to. -- Antonio Galloni (91-94) 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu The 2014 Barbaresco Vanotu is young, vibrant and beautifully focused. Even though the 2014 is still in oak, it has absorbed its new oak better than some other vintages at a similar stage, which is one of the signs of a wine with tremendous structure as well as potential. The wine's energy, focus and cut are all a marvel to behold. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. -- Antonio Galloni (93-95) 2013 Giorgio Pelissero Long Now Pelissero's 2013 Long Now is rich, explosive and powerful, with all the pedigree of the Barbera coming through first. Nebbiolo tannins hit the mid-palate and finish, rounding things out nicely. Scents of black cherry jam, mocha, espresso and menthol add nuance throughout. The French oak needs time to settle down. Otherwise, this is a fine effort. The creamy, voluptuous finish is striking. -- Antonio Galloni 93 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Long Now The 2014 Long Now, Pelissero's Barbera/Nebbiolo blend, is superb. -- Antonio Galloni (91-94)

Decanter Brook’s 10 Top Barbaresco&Barolo producers
Stephen Brook gives a personal view of the charms and complexities of Piedmont’s terroirs and wines, both traditional and more modern in style, and recommends two great wines from each of his 10 favorite producers. Giorgio Pelissero Pelissero is an unashamed modernist, eager to use, though judiciously, barriques for his opulent reds. He’s a showman, entertaining visitors at his new cellars in Treiso, but works hard too, regularly attending global wine fairs to promote his wines and recoup the considerable investments he has made. Even though his top Barbaresco, Vanotu, is aged entirely in new barriques, he is no devotee of new oak for its own sake. Other Barbarescos, such as the blend called Nubiola and the splendid Tulin from rocky soils, are aged in a mix of casks and barriques. There’s no shortage of outstanding winemakers in Barbaresco, but I just happen to like Pelissero: impish, confident but questioning; international in outlook, yet rooted in Treiso. And the wines are designed to give pleasure, and hardly ever disappoint. Vanotu, Barbaresco 2001: 93 Tulin, Barbaresco 2010: 93

A Look Back at the 2004&2005 Barbarescos by Galloni
A Look Back at the 2004 & 2005 Barbarescos Giorgio Pelissero Giorgio Pelissero's 2005s and 2004s have aged nicely. The only wine that was not as expressive as it was when I first tasted it is the 2004 Riserva, but that is a wine that was never commercially released, so I doubt many readers own it. The flagship Vanotu remains one of the classiest Barbarescos readers will find in a style that leans towards the modern, but without being over the top. From A Look Back at the 2004 & 2005 Barbarescos (Jun 2016) by Antonio Galloni 2005 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu: Giorgio Pelissero's 2005 Barbaresco Vanotu is a bit restrained, but it is also impeccably balanced and gorgeous today. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and menthol flesh out in a soft, open-knit Barbaresco to drink now and over the next decade or so. A touch of French oak adds volume and sweetness through to the finish, but the wood is nicely integrated throughout. Score: 94. 2005 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin (magnum): The 2005 Barbaresco Tulin, which I tasted from magnum, preserves terrific energy, even if the new oak tannins have never fully integrated. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, chalk and mint give the 2005 its distinctive, high-toned aromatics. The flavors are bright and nicely articulated throughout. Tulin can, at times, be a bit austere, especially in cooler years like 2005, and yet the wine has also stood the test of time nicely. This is another strong showing from Pelissero. Score: 92. 2004 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin: The 2004 Barbaresco Tulin has aged well, but it is also ready to drink, as the first signs of tertiary development have now begun to appear. Attractive scents of dark red cherry, plum, smoke, leather and licorice add to the wine's appeal. The 2004 was aged in a new 50-hectoliter cask, and some of the new oak tannins remain. Still, this is a very pretty, if somewhat burly Barbaresco. Crushed autumn leaves and truffles are some of the nuances that shape the finish. Score: 90. 2004 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu: The 2004 Barbaresco Vanotu is quite a bit fresher and more powerful than the Tulin. Dark and beautifully layered, the Vanotu has aged nicely, even if the new oak influence is considerable. Dark cherry, licorice, tobacco and dark spices meld together in this super-expressive, richly textured Barbaresco from Giorgio Pelissero. The 2004 has really blossomed over the last few years. Score: 95. 2004 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Riserva Vanotu: The 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Vanotu is a commemorative bottling Giorgio Pelissero made to celebrate his estate's 40th anniversary. Pelissero sourced fruit from the highest part of Vanotu in parcels his father first planted in 1964. As good as the Riserva is, four years in oak has played a significant role in shaping the wine's feel and texture. Perhaps I caught the Riserva in an awkward stage, but today the fruit is a bit dried out and the oak tannins are dominant. Hints of rose petal, mint and sweet red stone fruits emerge over time, but only reluctantly. Score: 93+. Di seguito il link dell'articolo:VINOUS

WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100 2015
This is rich and expressive, delivering cherry, tar and tobacco notes on a dense frame. The beefy tannins add plenty of grip on the long finish. Needs time. Best from 2017 through 2025. 90 Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin 2011: Pretty floral, cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors show accents of tobacco and spice in this red. Juicy, with a firm structure and lingering finish. Drink now through 2023. 89 Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola 2012: Already evoking macerated cherry, leather, tobacco and mineral flavors, this red is backed by firm tannins. Tips toward the tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2023. 91 Pelissero Nebbiolo Langhe 2013: Alluring aromas of flowers, cherry, strawberry, sandalwood and leather mark this muscular red. Finishes on the firm side, but should develop well. Drink now through 2021. 90 Pelissero Barbera d’Alba Tulin 2011: Impressive, this red is inky and dense, with blackberry, black currant and plum flavors. Remains lively, courtesy of the acidity, showing moderate grip on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2020.
Vinous’s ratings December 2015 part 2
From Affordable Piedmont – Dolcetto, Barbera & Langhe Nebbiolo (Dec 2015) by Antonio Galloni Giorgio Pelissero's entry-level wines are just as compelling as the Barbarescos this year. This range is especially notable for the number of wines that deliver both quality and value. 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Dolcetto d'Alba Augenta: Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and cloves are some of the notes that open up in the 2014 Dolcetto d'Alba Augenta. This is a gorgeous wine for the vintage. There is a level of sweetness and mid-palate intensity that I find particularly appealing. SCORE: 90. 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Dolcetto d'Alba Munfrina: The 2014 Dolcetto d'Alba Munfrina is deep, pungent and full of character. Bold red cherry/pomegranate notes open up first, followed by shades of earthiness, tobacco, wild flowers, mint and lavender that add nuance. SCORE: 89. 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Favorita: The 2014 Favorita is absolutely delicious. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and chamomile abound in a tasty, refreshing white to drink now and over the next year or two. SCORE: 89. 2014 Giorgio Pelissero Freisa: Crushed flowers, mint, rose petals, cinnamon and sweet red berries are all pushed forward in the 2014 Freisa, a delicious lightly sparkling red to drink now and over the next few years. SCORE: 88. 2013 Giorgio Pelissero Barbera d' Alba Piani: Pelissero's 2013 Barbera d' Alba Piani embodies the virtues of this cool, late-ripening vintage. Freshly cut flowers, mint, hard candy, spices and sweet dark cherries are some of the notes that inform this vibrant, super-expressive Barbera. In 2013, Giorgio Pelissero did not bottle his top of the line Barbera Tulin; all the best fruit went into the Piani. SCORE: 91. 2013 Giorgio Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo: The 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo is a fabulous example of the year. Crushed flowers, dried red cherries and mint are all beautifully delineated in this super-appealing, energetic, mid-weight Langhe Nebbiolo from Giorgio Pelissero. SCORE: 90. 2012 Giorgio Pelissero Barbera d'Alba Tulin: Dark, fleshy and supple, 2012 Barbera d'Alba Tulin captures the richness of the vintage in spades. Super-ripe dark cherries, plums, mint, cola and spices are front and center. This is an especially forward, giving Barbera, with all the elements in the right place. SCORE: 91. VINOUS

Vinous’s ratings December 2015
Giorgio Pelissero's 2012s have maintained gorgeous freshness, most of which can be attributed to the decision to move up picking dates slightly. The Nubiola is the most classic, mid-weight of the three Barbarescos, while the Vanotu is the most opulent and the Tulin is somewhere in between. Every wine I tasted at Pelissero during my most recent visit was both delicious and something I would personally want to drink, something I can say about only a small number of estates in Piedmont. 2013 Giorgio Pelissero Long Now: The 2013 Long Now, Pelissero's Barbera/Nebbiolo blend, is wonderfully nuance and sculpted, with striking aromatics and tons of energy. Sweet dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, menthol and licorice are fused into the nuanced, inviting finish. There aren't too many Barbera/Nebbiolo blends that remain interesting. This is one of them. SCORE: 92. 2012 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu: The 2012 Barbaresco Vanotu has the potential to be one of the wines of the vintage. Aromatically beguiling and beautifully layered in the glass, the Vanotu boasts serious depth and terrific overall balance. Hard candy, wild flowers, mint, lavender, black cherries and spices are laced into the super-expressive finish. The 2012 was aged in 80% new oak, all of which the wine has handled deftly. SCORE: 94. 2012 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Tulin: Deep, pliant and inviting, the 2012 Barbaresco Tulin offers lovely mid-palate intensity to match its powerful personality. Here the shades of fruit meld into the darker end of the spectrum as the wine fills out its broad shouldered frame effortlessly. Dark cherry, spice and leather add the final shades of nuance. SCORE: 94. 2012 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Nubiola: The 2012 Barbaresco Nubiola is the most aromatically precise, lifted wine in this range, as it so often is. Sweet tobacco, mint, crushed rose petal and bright red stone fruits all grace the palate in what has turned out to be a very classic-feeling wine for the vintage at Pelissero. The feminine, gracious finish only adds to the wine's considerable appeal. While the Tulin and Vanotu are richer wines, the Nubiola will appeal most to readers with more classically leaning palates. SCORE: 92 .VINOUS
2012 & 2013 Barbaresco – A Study in Contrasts
"Readers will find two very different sets of wines in the 2012 and 2013 Barbarescos. The 2012s are open-knit, supple and ready to drink, while the 2013s - from one of the latest years in recent memory - embody all the qualities that make Nebbiolo one of the world's most noble grapes; soaring aromatics, pulsating energy, structure, and, most importantly, the rare ability to transmit the essence of site. Barbaresco’s Emerging Young Producers All of which brings us to the present and future. Many of today’s most exciting Barbarescos are being made by the new generation of young producers". "In Treiso, Giorgio Pelissero makes racy, luscious Barbarescos full of personality. That is just the tip of the iceberg". "It is pretty clear that Barbaresco’s future is in the hands of today’s emerging young growers and winemakers. But Barbaresco’s producers need to get out more and eradicate a culture of insularity that has been the region’s Achilles heel for so long. Given what I have seen so far, I am optimistic that can happen".VINOUS

Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu 2012 91 points | 250 cases imported | Red Elegant and harmonious, offering cherry, strawberry, licorice and tar aromas and flavors.
MERANO WINE AWARD GOLD 2014
GUSTO SANO NOVEMBRE 2014 – VANOTU 2009

THE WINE ADVOCATE
Issue n. 207 June 2013 Giorgio Pelissero has a good amount of news to report from his corner of the Barbaresco appellation. He is putting the finishing touches on a new winery with extra room for storing old vintages. He is also about to announce the acquisition of four additional hectares that will bring his total vineyard holdings to an impressive 40 hectares (with 15 hectares of Nebbiolo in the Barbaresco denomination). Barbaresco Vanotu 2010: 94 points. The 2010 Barbaresco Vanotu is an extremely persuasive expression of Nebbiolo that opens to a dark, brooding color, thick concentration and an attractive dark garnet hue. The personality here is overtly savory and masculine with layers of cured meat and leather that support a wider offering of pressed cherries and tar. The generosity is outstanding. The only element out of place is the tannin that is spectacularly young at this point. This wine wont show its best side for years more to come. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035. Barbaresco Tulin 2010: 93+ points. The 2010 Barbaresco Tulin shows sheer power and extra concentration that is noticeable both in terms of the wines darkened color and the beautiful intensity of its aromas. Opulent oak and spice are wrapped tightly around a solid core of dark cherry and pressed blackberry. The tannins are clearly on the astringent side, but the aging window here promised to be extra long. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030. Barbaresco Nubiola 2010: 91 points. The 2010 Barbaresco Nubiola is a well-priced wine that delivers a beautiful and subdued appearance with bright garnet and ruby highlights. The feminine, but profound bouquet shows tones of pressed blue flower, cherry, wild berry and dark spice. The wine drinks young at this stage and promises a steady evolution thanks to the natural freshness of the acidity and the astringent youthfulness of the tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.
